Coastal

I live in Bideford, North Devon and the coastal scenery is truly breathtaking as it is varied. The 60 mile long coast encompasses startling, rugged cliffs pounded by the Atlantic waves, fantastic flat sandy beaches, caves and little coves, rock pools, river estuaries and secret places.

The area is full of history and it is the ideal place for an artist like myself to capture on canvas the spectacle of the coast as the seasons pass by throughout the year. It is an ever changing environment so I also work from photographs I’ve taken, as well as sketches to help me remember the moment.

Landscapes

The scenery inland around the North Devon coastal regions are truly a feast for the eyes. Quiet country lanes bordered by high hedgerows criss-cross the countryside, while fast flowing rivers and rapids pass through wild flower filled meadows and woodland, with forested hills towering all around.

Then there is Exmoor National Park, home to some of the most varied and beautiful scenery in England. The peat moors give way to heather uplands, replete with a variety of grasses and plants, such as gorse and whortleberry. Pretty villages dot the area as if trapped in time. Little wonder therefore that painting such settings gives me such a pleasure and I hope that the paintings I present here will also inspire you to enjoy the beauty of nature that is on our doorstep.

People

Over the years I have experimented with portraits, in both water colour and oil. Family, friends, and commissions from photographs. This galleries shows some of my work.

In the process of painting landscapes, I quite often add figures to add interest, or give scale to a scene. There can be no doubt that the subject of a painting can change with the inclusion of people because emphasis shifts from the surroundings to the activity in which the figures are involved. I have included some of these in my landscapes gallery demonstrating what I mean. I plan to create more in the future.
